“Mother always liked to be looked up to.” -Ed Kemper
Ed Kemper, or the Co-ed Killer, is known for the deaths of many young women in addition to some of his own family members. Kemper would capture, kill, butcher, and violate his victims. Kemper did his best to keep up with Santa Cruz, California’s title of “Murder Capital of the World” in the 1960s and ’70s.
Kemper had previously tried to join the police force, but was rejected due to his size–a whopping 6’9″ tall and 280 lbs. Despite his high IQ, Kemper suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. Kemper’s involvement with the justice system allowed him to plan his kills accordingly.
Some of Kemper’s murders were so brutal, they are unsettling to speak of:
(7:48) “I just think about these cops, just entering these crime scenes. Like you hear those stories of the cops at the crime scene that immediately leave and go puke? I feel like that would have been one.”
After the merciless murder of his mother, Kemper escaped to Colorado, called authorities, and turned himself in for all his murders. On trial, Kemper was found legally sane and is still serving time in prison.
In this episode, guest Megan and host Skye discuss the brutal murders performed by Ed Kemper.
